Last updated 13th May 2022. Please note it is your responsibility to ensure if proof of vaccination is required to travel, that you can demonstrate this and have the appropriate documentation

How to demonstrate your proof of vaccination

  • If you live in England, you are registered with a GP surgery and are aged 12* and over, the NHS COVID Pass shows your vaccination details or test results which is easy to download or email from the NHS App or website. Make sure If you are using the printed PDF version of the NHS Covid Pass which you have downloaded, that you always check the expiry date of the barcode on it. Prior to the 12th May 2022, they were valid for 30 days, however if you access your Pass from the 12th May, it will be valid for 180 days. The pass refreshes every time you log in. Don’t worry if you don’t have the App, you can either call 119 to request what is called a NHS COVID Pass letter proving your vaccination status (the barcodes in your letter will also expire after 180 days from the 12th May) (do not call if you're travelling in more than 4 weeks' time) OR you can obtain it online via NHS.UK

    • The NHS COVID Pass is usually available within 24 hours of having your vaccination, but it can take up to 5 days for your records to be updated

    • You should wait 5 days after you’ve been fully vaccinated before applying for an NHS COVID Pass letter for travel abroad. It can then take up to 7 days for your letter to arrive

  • If you’ve received a booster vaccination, it will show in your NHS COVID Pass within 5 days. You’ll see a 2D barcode for your full course of vaccinations plus your booster vaccination. Your vaccinations will show in reverse order, with the most recent first. This is also the case if you download a PDF of your NHS COVID Pass for travel, or store it within the Apple Wallet or Google Pay Wallet. You’ll also see your detailed booster vaccination information in the ‘View COVID-19 Records’ section of the NHS COVID Pass within the NHS App and online service

  • Proof of recovery from prior COVID-19 infection if you have tested positive on an NHS PCR test in the last 180 days is also shown in your NHS COVID Pass. You cannot use the NHS COVID Pass letter to prove that you’ve recovered from COVID-19

  • You should check that your first name and your surname on your passport match how they are displayed by your NHS COVID Pass at least 3 weeks before you travel. If the names are different, contact your GP practice to have your details updated. Please note, name changes could result in temporary issues with matching your GP record to your hospital and prescription records

  • Fully vaccinated children aged 12 to 15* who live in England & Wales can also request a NHS COVID Pass letter for international travel by calling 119 (England) or 0300 303 5667 if you live in Wales. A person with legal responsibility for a child aged 12 to 15 (such as a parent or guardian) can also request the letter on their behalf. The NHS COVID Pass letter is not available to those who have received an incomplete course of vaccination (such as 1 dose of a 2-dose vaccine). The NHS COVID Pass letter service is for international vaccination status only and not recovery or negative test results. Your GP cannot provide you with this letter or service

  • *Since the 3rd February, children aged 12 and over are able to get a digital NHS COVID Pass for international travel if they live in England & Wales, recovery from a previous infection (in the last 180 days) will only be recorded if their infection was confirmed via a NHS PCR test and not from a lateral flow test

    • A digital NHS COVID Pass will be available via the NHS.UK website for those aged 12 and over (as a PDF you can download or print) or via the NHS App for those aged 13 and over (age restrictions apply for use of the App)

    • To get a NHS COVID Pass, your child will first need to register for a NHS login. Once they have logged into the NHS COVID Pass service and clicked on ‘Travel’, they will be asked to prove their identity. They can do this themselves (or a parent or guardian can help them).

    • Your child will need to:

      • Register for an NHS login using their own email address and enter their details as recorded at the GP

      • Take a photo of their photo ID (such as their passport)

      • Record a short video of their face saying the 4 digits as shown on screen (this is to provide a physical match to their photo ID)

      • Once your child has submitted this information to prove their identity (or you’ve helped them to do it), it will then be checked to ensure a correct match to your child’s NHS record

      • This usually takes a few hours, but during busy periods may take a few days. You should ensure that you register and prove the identity of your child well in advance of international travel

  • If you are required to have proof of vaccination to enter a country, please pay particular attention to which vaccines are accepted by each country, when they should have been administered and if a booster is required. When you see proof of 'full vaccination' as a requirement, this normally means proof of two doses of a two dose vaccine at least 14 days before entry, however this can differ from country to country. For unrestricted travel to the EU, those who received their second dose more than nine months ago will need a booster. You should continue to check the validity of your vaccination status before travelling and the specific entry requirememts before you travel

  • If you’re about to travel, you should download an updated PDF version of your NHS COVID Pass, or store an updated version in your Apple Wallet or Google Pay Wallet

  • If you have not been fully vaccinated, you should continue to follow the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to, and should carefully research the requirements of your destination country
